Mersey Poets

Mersey Poets
Also known as the Liverpool Poets, the Mersey Poets were Adrian Henri (1932–), Roger McGough (1937–) and Brian Patten (1946–). Writing during the 1960s, they published three collections as a group: The Mersey Sound (1967), The Liverpool Scene (1967) and New Volume (1983). Taking their style from both the American ‘beat poets’, and from the explosion of musical talent in Liverpool during the 1960s, they pioneered performance poetry in Britain. Their style was humorous and fitted in well with the tenets of pop art. All three have published poetry separately, and two have found careers within other media, Henri as an artist and art critic, McGough as a member of the satirical pop group Scaffold.
